What we do
Besides monitoring quality of life issues (traffic safety, economic vitality, development density, zoning, police, fire and other pubic services) and maintaining an active dialog with local government, the Haverford Civic Association funds the Snowflake lighting on the Haverford stretch of Lancaster Avenue, sponsors events and cleanup activities at Sharpe Park Bird Sanctuary and engages in other civic improvement projects.
Who we listen and talk to
We communicate directly with our elected local government officials, township department managers, local business owners and other civic leaders. The Lower Merion Township Commissioners who represent Haverford regularly attend our meetings and report on the latest developments. They are there to listen as well as talk.
How we relate to others
We also get updates on goings on in other parts of the township. Haverford Civic Association is a member of the Federation of Civics of Lower Merion and Narberth, an umbrella organization for a dozen or more local civic associations who share common interests and concerns. We send delegates to Federation meetings to offer Haverford’s perspective on the issues of the day, and they report back on what’s on the minds of our colleagues elsewhere.
How we support local business
Haverford has no local chamber of commerce or formal business organization, so Haverford Civic Association helps to fill that gap by supporting a variety of community improvement initiatives, like the seasonal Snowflake lights on Lancaster Avenue and the enrichment of Sharpe Park Bird Sanctuary. We also encourage commercial activity by, among other things, lobbying for new tenants to revitalize vacant stores and offices, such as rehabilitating and refurbishing the long-vacant, historic Haverford rail station. We celebrate a vibrant local economy and invite our business and institutional partners to speak at our meetings. Local businesses – especially the small, independent, locally owned ones – are the economic backbone of our community, supplying the goods and services we rely on to sustain our daily lives.
