SUPPORT THE HAVERFORD CIVIC ASSOCIATION

HAVERFORD CIVIC ASSOCIATION

 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Each year at this time, we reach out to our Haverford neighbors and business owners and ask that they join, or renew their membership in, the Haverford Civic Association (“HCA”).  The HCA is a not-for-profit organization that promotes community strength, acts as a liaison between residents and government, manages neighborhood beautification, celebrates our open space, supports local festivities and provides a voice to the Federation of Civic Associations.  The HCA board is comprised of Haverford residents who serve voluntarily and meet monthly (July and August excepted).

This past year, HCA met with local residents or business owners in seven matters before the township, planted and maintained Haverford Station Road (which received a horticultural award) maintained the planters at the Haverford train station, assisted in the promotion of Sharpe Park and Bird Sanctuary with the Garden Workers,  sponsored the Second Annual “Art in Sharpe Park,” installed and maintained the seasonal “snowflakes” along Lancaster Avenue and acted on key matters brought before the Lower Merion Federation of Civic Associations.

HCA typically holds an annual gathering in Sharpe Park in September of each year.  Due to scheduling conflicts, holiday schedules and daylight savings time, a suitable date was not found.  As such, Twilight in the Park will not be held this year.

We do offer an alternative.  We are very pleased to announce that John Fry, the president of Drexel University and a resident of Haverford, will address the HCA on November 20, 2012.  Mr. Fry will give a very informative presentation followed by a question and answer session.  We invite all Haverford residents and business owners to attend this most interesting event.  Admission is complimentary.

As an added bonus, you will also be able to meet and greet three township commissioners affiliated with HCA, Steven K. Lindner of Ward 4 (south of Montgomery Ave), Cheryl B. Gelber, Esq. of Ward 5 (East of Grays Lane) and V. Scott Zelov of Ward 10 (west of Grays Lane).

Please consider a new or renewal membership in the Haverford Civic Association.  Your contribution is our sole source of funding.  Help us support community betterment and foster good will and a spirit of cooperation within Haverford.

Once again, PLEASE JOIN HCA and spread the word………

 November 20, 2012 from 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Ardmore fire chief Tom Hayden is still in intensive care at the University of Pennsylvania following the Friday evening fire in which he rescued a 102 year-old woman from a kitchen fire in her Villanova home.

Hayden arrived first at the fire in the 2200 block of North Ridge Lane and brought the woman out of the smoke filled home. Hayden suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Firefighters from Merion Fire Company of Ardmore thanked the community for all the offers of assistance, prayers and kind wishes on their website. The firefighters said Chief Hayden is expected to make a complete recovery.

Lower Merion Deputy Fire Marshal Jim McCoy said the woman was released from the hospital on Saturday and is home with her family.

Main LIne Times Covers Second Annual Art In Sharpe Park

Haverford Civic Association not a ‘fly-by-night organization’

On June 9 the Haverford Civic Association hosted “Art in Sharpe Park.” Haverford Civic Association members, friends and families strolled the park browsing over the vendors of art and crafts items. The ever-motivated committee headed by Jane Carton and friends got things going with interesting vendors and even included a gourmet hot-dog stand. With the money raised going toward the purchase of bird-friendly plantings for the park and their mission to start a collection of bird houses to be installed to attract various species… this is no fly-by-night operation. It’s strictly for the birds!

2nd Annual “Art in Sharpe Park” – Another Masterpiece

On Saturday, June 9th under sunny skies, sixteen artisits and craftspersons enjoyed the spendor Share Park and the 2nd Annual “Art in Sharpe Park.”  The attendance doubled from our 2011 inaugural event, vendor activity increased by 50% and hot dog consumption set a new record!!  We look forward to the 3rd annual Art in Sharpe Park in June, 2013.

The Haverford Civic Associaiton would like to thank all attending artists for their participation and support.  We would also like to thank the family and business members of the Haverford Civic Associaiton, without whom our community events would be difficult to provide.  We would also like to express our continued gratitude to The Garden Workers who toil without fanfare to keep Sharpe Park looking spiffy and to the Parks and Recreation department of Lower Merion Township for its continued support and guideance.   We also owe a nod of gratitude to our 3 local commissioners, Steven Linder of Ward 4, Cheryl Gelber, Esq. of Ward 5 and V. Scott Zelov of Ward 10 for their wise counsel and continued involvement in our community outreach efforts.

Lastly and most importantly, we salute our board member and secretary, Jane Carton, the visionary of, and driving force behind behind Art in Sharpe Park,  her able aide, Lorraine Jones, board member and treasurer, and all board members who assisted in the planning and promotion of what we hope to be an annual community event for years to come.
